Maintenance & Safety
How Do You Start Fires and Follow Leave No Trace?
Leave-no-trace fire starting means established rings only, dead-and-down wood, no new scorch marks, and ash carried out or fully cold and scattered — a waxed roll helps directly, because one roll lights the fire with no foil, no plastic packaging and no half-burned fluid bottles left behind.
The LNT Fire Practice
- Use an established fire ring, fire pan or mound fire — never a new ring on fresh ground.
- Gather dead-and-down wood only, pencil-to-wrist thickness, from wide of the camp.
- Light with one waxed roll — no foil, no packaging scraps, no fluid bottles in the fire.
- Burn down to white ash; add nothing in the last 30 minutes that will not burn.
- Douse, stir, douse again; scatter cold ash wide of camp, and pack out any unburned trash — the fire ring is not an incinerator.
Where Rolls Fit the Ethic
- Zero packaging to burn or bury — the roll is the packaging.
- One roll per fire means no half-empty gel packets or fluid bottles to pack out sticky.
- Faster, cooler-ignition fires scorch the ring less than repeated failed paper-and-match attempts.

How Do You Start Fires and Follow Leave No Trace? — FAQ
Is it OK to burn trash in a campfire to avoid packing it out?
No — foil, plastic and coated paper never fully burn and become both litter and toxic smoke; pack out everything you packed in.
What if there is no fire ring at my site?
Build a mound fire on a mineral-soil tarp footprint or use a fire pan, and fully restore the site — or skip the fire and use a stove with a Compact roll.
